Mark Rothko's art focuses on the expression of spiritual connotations. He tries to reflect deep symbolism through a limited number of colors and few shapes. He believes that today's western civilization is rooted in the traditional western culture, especially the Greek culture. The conflict between man and nature, individual and group in the spirit of Greek tragedy is the portrayal of the basic living state of man. "I'm not interested in the relationship between color and form or anything else... I am only interested in expressing basic human emotions, tragic, eclectic, destructive, and so on. The fact that many people can weep in front of my pictures shows that I have indeed expressed basic human emotions, and that those who weep in front of my pictures will have the same religious experience that I have when I paint them. If you're just moved by the relationship of color, you're missing the core of my art."
